New York Weekend
last weekend Laura and I went to New York City to see the DOT DASH festival. lots of people from New Orleans, Memphis, and Austin where there. seems like everytime I go to NYC I see people from the south.
also, I ramdomly on the street ran into two people in seperate incidents, from years ago in New Orleans, Andy Biser and Megan (can't remember last name right now...ART?) Laura also randomly ran into a childhood friend on the street in Brooklyn and we had dinner with her. NYC is so Bizarre.
HIGHLIGHTS of DOT DASH FESTIVAL
Cajun SS---these guys were really great. it was great to see a very large crowd who knew all of thier lyrics and were singing/shouting along.
the Scripts were also very good. score two for new orleans.
King Louie one man band was also quite good. score three for new orleans.
but really, the reason I had to go to this festival was to see two INDIANA bands who I grew up with, and saw in my younger years....the ZERO BOYS and the GIZMOS.
the ZERO BOYS for want of a better term, KICKED ASS. they just blitzed through the VICIOUS CIRCLE LP in the same exact order of songs as on the LP. "Aphetamine Addiction,"
Civilizations Dying" "living in the 80's" "High Time" etc...man what a set of songs....the power on the block had gone out in the club and the only lights on where the emergency lights and exit lights, and there was NO AIR CONDITIONING...I seriously think it was 100 degrees in there. a true punk rock show! but the Zero Boys just stomped the crowd.
they played it like it mattered and singer Paul Mahern, being a health nut, actually jumped around and stage dived like a 20 year old. and he still had the snotty vocals.
people went ballistic. I actually thought it was the 80's there for a second. the only downside was that they didn't do any of thier earlier songs, which are some of my faves; they didn't do "stoned to death," "i'm bored," "she said goodbye" or "indianpolis." oh well...you can't have everything.
the second night of the festival featured the GIZMOS (the 2nd, HOOSIER HYSTERIA line up...) and I have to give them a more mixed review than the Zero Boys...for one thing, the 1st line up of the GIZMOS would have been more appropriate for the audience of this festival. 2ndly, for lack of a better term, the gizmos seemed to be having a bad night. it happens!
the gizmos seemed to have a few self confidence/practice issues. the over all sound was a little too "clean" and unfocused. also, song choice and song order choice were a little off. unfortunatly, a good bit of the crowd was, I think scratching thier heads trying to figure the gizmos out...unfortunate, because the gizmos have great songs and can and will kick ass, but were apparently haveing a bad night. all that having been said, it was still exciting to see songs like "my baby loves crime," Bible Belt Babies," "Progressive Rock," Dead Astronauts," and "Lightweight" done live, especially since the last time I saw the gizmos(in a show that just totally kicked my ass) was in about 1987.
